Two goals from Bethany England and one from Sam Kerr ensured that Chelsea Women sealed qualification to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League at the expense of Benefica, unscathed.

Chelsea’s no.9, Bethany England, scored his first on the night and Chelsea’s 6th on aggregate after wrong footing the Benfica goalkeeper and firing one into the far corner of the net. Sam Kerr did more damage to the Benfica side by adding the second in the 65th minute before Fran Kirby supplied England’s second on the night to seal a thumping victory for the defending WSL Champions.

The result put Chelsea Women into the last 16 of the Women’s UEFA Champions League alongside defending Champions Lyon and 13 others, with the last slot to be decided when Vålerenga take on Brøndby in the remaining fixtures on 7 and 14 February.

Lyon saw off Juventus to make it 24 wins out of 24 in the 12 seasons of the round of 32 while the likes of Wolfsburg, Barcelona have also secured a place in the round of 16.

With the sad passing away of former Liverpool manager, Gerard Houllier, Lyon paid tribute to a man who once served as a technical director for the French side.

Houllier was in charge when Liverpool won their historic treble in 2011 and was also acting as the technical director when Lyon defeated Barcelona at the Groupama Arena in Hungary to claim their sixth Women’s Champions League trophy.
