When are the Premier League fixtures for 2022-23 released?

The 2022/23 Premier League season will be an unusual one because of its break for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which takes place in Qatar in November and December.

This will be the first season in which the action will resume eight days after a World Cup final, but some traditions remain: the release of the Premier League fixtures in the summer allows fans to start plotting the next nine months anew.

The two sides who have been automatically promoted from the Championship provide familiar stadiums for supporters to head to, as Bournemouth and Fulham both bounced back in 2021/22 after being relegated the previous season.

Newcomers to the scene will include incoming Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, fresh from scoring 86 goals in 89 games for Borussia Dortmund. Here are the dates to look out for.

Fans have less than a month to wait between the final day of the 2021/22 season and the release of the 2022/23 Premier League fixtures.

The schedule is expected to be released by the Premier League on June 16, 2022 at 9 a.m. BST / 4 a.m. ET.

When does next season start?

Adjusted to accommodate the World Cup, the 2022/23 Premier League season will start eight days earlier than the previous campaign.

The first fixtures will be scheduled for August 6, 2022, giving players a break of around two and a half months from Premier League action.

The last set of fixtures before the Premier League stops for the World Cup will be played over the weekend of November 12-13.

The World Cup final takes place on December 18 and the league will resume on December 26. The final round of matches, to be played on May 28, 2023, will kick off simultaneously.

How does the fixture computer actually work?

The Premier League says a “complex process” starts after the EFL play-off finals, when the composition of each division is finally known.

Clubs are placed in a “pairing grid” to define the dates when they will play their home games; Everton and Liverpool, for example, can’t play at home on the same day due to the close proximity of their grounds and the policing that is needed.

When the computer knows who is away and who is at home on every date across the season, it can then “mix clubs up randomly” to determine which matches take place on which date.

The software can also take a club’s previous schedule and any apparent gripes into consideration.

“If there are issues with a club’s fixtures one year, you try to take that into account in the next year and try to ensure if there is an undesirable set of fixtures, they don’t get it two seasons in a row,” Glenn Thompson of Atos, the company that helps compile the list, told the Premier League’s website ahead of the last reveal.

“You can’t satisfy everyone. It’s a compromise across all clubs.”
