Sadio Mane explains why he has no desire to be like Cristiano Ronaldo

Sadio Mane has insisted that he has no interest in living the same life as Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Liverpool star has established himself as one of the best players in the world after an incredible few seasons with club and country.

As well as becoming central to Jurgen Klopp’s plans, he helped the Reds win their first-ever Premier League title.

And the 29-year-old was also pivotal the year before when Liverpool won the Champions League, the sixth in their history.

But Mane went one better and took his success to international level when he led Senegal to the African Cup of Nations in January – the first time the country has won the trophy.

However, despite his wide-ranging success in sport which will cement his name in its history, the forward is renowned for his humble exterior and introverted character.

In a discussion about his life, the former Southampton star admitted that he could not copy the lifestyle of Manchester United star Ronaldo.

The Portuguese superstar is the most-followed person on Instagram and is one of, if not, the most talked-about sportspeople in the world.

But that lifestyle does not interest Mane, who told L’Equipe: “I don’t want to give the impression of being a lecturer.

“But it is true that there are certain values circulating in football that bother me a bit based on my education.

“But, instead of criticising out loud, sometimes I prefer to distance myself a bit.

“The main thing is not to change, and I don’t think it has changed.

“And, for a boy who comes from a small town in Casamance, it is already a great victory to resist all that.”

When asked if he could copy Ronaldo or Neymar’s lifestyle, he replied: “No! I follow them on social media and that’s enough for me.

“I love their extraordinary life, but that life is not made for me.”

In a wide-ranging interview, Mane also delved into his Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah’s reaction in the AFCON final.

Senegal beat Salah’s Egypt on penalties in a nail-biting clash between two of the best forwards in the Premier League.

And Mane scored the winning penalty while his club teammate did not even get the chance to take his spot-kick and finishing on the losing side.

“It was clear to me that after our triumph he was very disappointed,” Mane said of Salah.

“I was not going to leave him without a word. What I did, he would have done in the same way if things had been the other way around.

“I gave him some simple words, enough to try to comfort him, asking him to never give up.”
