Argentina progressed to the last 16 of the World Cup with a 2-0 win over Poland and Tottenham star Cristian Romero has won some praise.

In a game where Lionel Messi proved he was human by missing a penalty, Argentina ensured progression as group winners.

Romero was back in the starting line-up and he took his chance with a classy performance at the centre of defence.

The 24-year-old had struggled going into this World Cup with a hamstring problem, but he now seems to be over it.

His performance earned some plaudits from the national media and their comments will make interesting reading.

The Buenos Aires Times claimed: “Romero is now back to his best after a nightmare World Cup debut.”

La Prensa were also impressed, writing: “Against Saudi Arabia, he left a thousand doubts. Against Poland, he reappeared, which is a guarantee of security.

Romero has endured a bit of a troublesome time at Tottenham since arriving from Atalanta in 2021.

He joined initially on loan before Tottenham forked out £43.1 million to land him on a permanent basis.

The North London-based club just simply haven’t been able to call on him often enough, however.

He’s managed just 43 appearances for the club but Antonio Conte will be happy with his latest showing at least.
