It has been reported that former Premier League referee Jon Moss departed from his role with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following disputes with other officials.
Moss, who is 53 years old, spent over a decade as a referee in the top tier of English football, with his final Premier League season being in 2021-22. He also officiated the Championship play-off final between Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest.
Moss was appointed by the PGMOL as the director of Premier League officials in the following year, initially joining as manager of the group. However, he left his most recent role in less than a year, effective immediately this month. According to The Telegraph, his departure followed a “bitter” falling out with several leading officials. Referees chief Howard Webb will assume Moss’ responsibilities for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.
Jon Moss was initially appointed to the PGMOL by Mike Riley, who later stepped down from his role at the end of the 2022-23 season. Riley’s successor, Howard Webb, took over ahead of the current campaign and has been involved in highlighting contentious decisions on his Match Officials Mic’d Up show. According to a report by The Telegraph, Moss’ departure from the PGMOL was mutual, with neither he nor the organization commenting on the matter. In a statement, PGMOL expressed their gratitude to Moss for his efforts and service during his time at the organization and wished him well for the future.
The Telegraph’s report also notes that Moss’ responsibilities included critiquing performances and reviewing decisions. However, the report does not name any referees who are said to have had a falling out with him.
