NBA GM Survey: Lakers tipped to defend title; Giannis to win MVP

The Los Angeles Lakers have been tipped as the favorites to win the 2020-2021 NBA after their success last season, while Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks is expected to win the Kia Most Valuable player (MVP) of the new season according to GMs survey.

Lakers led by Lebron James and Anthony Davis, won the NBA last season and have been tipped to defend the title this season ahead of the likes of LA Clippers and Brooklyn Nets.


Lakers were picked by 81% of responding general managers followed by LA Clippers with 11% with the likes of Miami Heat and and Brooklyn Nets also receiving votes.

The percentage received by Lakers represents the third highest rate in the history of the survey, trailing only the Golden State Warriors in 2017-18 (93%) and 2018-19 (87%).

LeBron James and his Lakers teammate, Anthony Davis, were however not picked as favorites for the Kia MVP as they as they placed third behind Giannis Antetokounmpo of Milwaukee Bucks and Luka Doncic of Dallas.


Giannis Antetokounmpo received 32% of the vote and was only followed by Luka Doncic who had 21%. LeBron James and Anthony Davis also had 18% respectively while Kevin Durant of Brooklyn Nets had 7% and Nikola Jokic of Denver had 4%.

Giannis was also picked as the first player to be signed if one were starting an NBA franchise alongside Doncic with 43%.


According to the NBA, the GMs responded to 33 different questions about the best teams, players, coaches and offseason moves. General managers were not permitted to vote for their own team or personnel. Percentages are based on the pool of respondents to that particular question, rather than all 30 GMs.
