Mohamed Salah issues contract update: “I want to stay, but…”

Mohamed Salah is in no doubt that he wants to stay at Liverpool and sign a new contract.

The player has provided an update, insisting that he wants to stay but this one is in FSG’s hands, it seems.

Mohamed Salah, already one of the world’s best players, is having the season of his life.

He’s dominating the Premier League’s goalscoring charts, topping the pile for both goals and assists.

We’ve seen brilliant goal after brilliant goal, too, and all together, no one else in the world is matching all of this.

Some players might be scoring consistently but are they doing it quite so spectacularly?

Are they also finding ways to create for teammates every game? It’s just ridiculous what Salah is doing and it makes his contract situation incredibly frustrating.

The Egyptian has around 18 months left on his current deal. That means this summer is the final time Liverpool could sell him for decent money – surely the route they’ll go down, rather than risking him leave for free.

That all changes, of course, if Salah signs a new contract. So what’s the hold-up? According to the forward, it’s all in Liverpool’s hands.

Mohamed Salah on his Liverpool contract

“I want to stay, but it’s not in my hands. It’s in their hands,” Salah told GQ. “They know what I want. I’m not asking for crazy stuff.

“The thing is when you ask for something and they show you they can give you something, [they should]” he says.

“Because they appreciate what you did for the club. I’ve been here for my fifth year now. I know the club very well. I love the fans. The fans love me. But with the administration, they have [been] told the situation. It’s in their hands.”

That ‘administration’ is FSG, the Liverpool owners. There’s little doubt, after all, that the coaching staff want Salah to stay.

Jurgen Klopp, for instance, believes Salah is a ‘remarkable’ player who makes things easier.

“He’s never satisfied,” Klopp told GQ.

“He’s so attentive to what we are asking of him for what helps the team. But alongside that, his commitment to individual improvement is remarkable.

“Whether it be the fitness and conditioning coaches or the nutritionist or whoever, he looks for those small margins everywhere.”

It sounds as though Salah’s position is fairly clear, then. He wants to stay but he wants what he feels the club can give him – and suggests they’ve shown him they can.

This will rumble on for another little while, certainly. But, surely, there can only be one outcome. If Salah wants to be at Liverpool, they’ve got to do all they can to keep him.
