Mikel Arteta unsure of Özil return

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted that he is unsure whether German International Mesut Özil will return to the clubs’ squad in January. The Spanish said the team will assess the future of the German playmaker Özil at the end of the transfer window.

Arsenal Football Club is finding ways to offload a number of players on loan to trim their squad, raising questions as to if Özil will be included in the squad for the second half of the 2020/21 season. The German playmaker was not included in the club’s Premier League and Europa squad alongside defender Sokratis Papastahopoulous.

Reacting to a question about a potential return for the 32-year old former Real Madrid player, Arteta said “We will see what happens in the transfer window and will assess that at the end”. He also indicated that the club will not look to cut short the contract of players that are not in his plans.

You have to respect the players’ contracts. What you can do is just try to be open with them, tell them your intentions, the role that they have in the team, and why that is. They are entitled to make the decision in their lives because they have a contract here,” he said.

Some would like to move because they are not playing and some would like to stay. That’s something we cannot decide by ourselves.
