After a summer transfer saga that saw Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi reject a move to Liverpool, the Spanish star is now eager to join the Premier League side in the January transfer window.
According to reports from Estadio Deportivo, Zubimendi regrets his decision to stay with his boyhood club and is keen to revive talks with the Reds.
Liverpool, who had a relatively quiet summer with only two signings—goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and winger Federico Chiesa—were heavily linked with Zubimendi throughout the transfer window. However, despite early indications that the player was open to the move, the deal fell through as Zubimendi chose to remain in La Liga.
The midfielder, fresh off winning Euro 2024 with Spain, now appears to be pushing for a transfer to Anfield after seeing Liverpool’s strong start to the season under manager Arne Slot. Liverpool currently sit fourth in the Premier League and have impressed in their Champions League campaign with a 3-1 victory over AC Milan.
Real Sociedad, on the other hand, have struggled in La Liga, sitting 16th in the table after a disappointing start to their domestic season. Zubimendi, who helped his national team to European glory, might now be questioning his choice to stay, especially as Liverpool continue to build momentum.
While Zubimendi is eager to join the Anfield project in January, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will reignite their interest in the midfielder when the transfer window reopens.
