Former Liverpool star jailed for leading “Multi-Million Pound” drug operation

Former Liverpool football prodigy, Jamie Cassidy, once destined for greatness on the pitch alongside legends like Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for his involvement in a multi-million-pound drug operation.

Now 46 years old, Cassidy’s life took a drastic turn after a series of injuries ended his football career prematurely. Led by his older brother Jonathan Cassidy and their business partner Nasar Ahmed, the drug racket transported large quantities of cocaine from South America into Europe, with Liverpool as a key hub.

Cassidy, who had once been accepted into the Liverpool FC academy alongside Carragher and Owen, played a pivotal role in distributing the cocaine across England and Scotland through a network of trusted couriers. Despite his promising start in football, injuries plagued Cassidy’s career, leading to his release from Liverpool in 1999 at the age of 21. His descent into criminality starkly contrasts with his early aspirations on the pitch.

Operating under aliases like “Nuclear-Dog” and “Whisky-Wasp” on the EncroChat encrypted communications system, Cassidy and his associates coordinated the purchase, importation, sale, and distribution of large quantities of cocaine. The operation also involved laundering money through a property business, with investments made in various properties in Liverpool.

The downfall of the drug racket came when the EncroChat system was compromised by law enforcement, exposing thousands of criminals, including the Cassidys. Jonathan attempted to evade capture by fleeing to Dubai but was eventually apprehended upon his return to the UK. Jamie was also arrested at his home in Knowsley, where officers found incriminating evidence, including encrypted phones and documents related to the operation.

Both Cassidy brothers and Ahmed pleaded guilty to various charges, including conspiracy to supply controlled drugs and conspiracy to transfer criminal property. The case serves as a cautionary tale of the consequences of succumbing to a life of crime, despite once having the world at their feet in the world of sports.
