Barcelona legend Lionel Messi in an exclusive interview with Spanish TV station La Sexta, has opened up on his failed attempt to leave the club last summer, a potential reunion with former Barcelona boss, Pep Guardiola, and the ‘crazy’ departure of Luis Suarez from Barcelona.
Lionel Messi came very close to leaving his boyhood club last summer after several years with the club, but was denied by the club’s hierarchy, who were determined not to let him leave for free.
The disagreement between the player and the then Barcelona board dominated headlines throughout the summer and Messi has now confirmed that he wanted to leave the club as the cycle had ended.
He told La Sexta: I love Barcelona, it’s my life. I have a love story with Barça, they gave me everything.
Leaving for free last summer? I knew that if we went to court, we would have won. Not just one lawyer told me that, many did. But I didn’t want to leave Barça in that way…AdvertisementAdvertisement
I spent the whole year telling Bartomeu that I wanted to leave Barcelona. But the president always said ‘No’. The burofax was a way to make it official. I thought I had completed a cycle. I needed a change. I wanted to go, Barça cycle was over.
In fact Manchester was thought to be his preferred destination because of the relationship he has with former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.
Messi has named the Spaniard as the best coach he has ever worked with after he guided Barcelona to win 14 trophies in a few years, including a historic double in his first season in charge, leading to reports that the Argentine been preferred working with him again if he had moved.
Responding to the rumors, Messi said: “I don’t know how long my last chat with Pep Guardiola was, but we do talk.
We don’t talk about whether we are going to meet again. For me Pep is the best, he has something special.
I’m not negotiating as a free agent with any club. As I said, I have nothing clear until the end of the season. Let’s see how we do this season and what happens.
While Messi was unable to leave Camp Nou, one of his best friends Luis Suarez left the club, years after Neymar had switched camps to PSG and Messi believes that it was crazy for Luis Suarez to the leave the club.
He said: “What happened with Luis Suarez to Atléti was… crazy! He left for free, paying the remaining years of his contract and he joined a team that fight for the same objectives as us. Unbelievable”.
