Twitter exploded after Lionel Messi was dropped from the FIFA 21 Team of the Year

Several people have taken to Twitter to express their shock or otherwise of the omission of Lionel Messi from this year’s EA team of the year.

Since it’s introduction in 2011, EA Sports annually reveals a Team of the Year and, yesterday, the game publishers revealed the FIFA 21 team of the year.

The biggest talking point was the omission of football icon Lionel Messi from the list, marking the first time the Barcelona ace has been excluded from the EA Team of the Year.

The team of the world’s best players is selected from a pool of 70 candidates – the best footballers in the last twelve months – based on fan votes. EA Sports revealed that FIFA 21 was named Team of the Year after more than 10 million votes were cast.

The Argentine ace, Lionel Messi was the notable absentee from the final squad after the Blaugranas crashed out of the 2019/20 Champions league season.

Hans Dieter Flick’s treble-winners Bayern Munich was adequately represented in the FIFA 21 Team of the Year with 4 of their players making the cut. Two Liverpool players made the team after helping the Reds win the prestigious Premier League trophy last season.

EA Team of the Year

Manuel Neuer – Bayern Munich

Alfonso Davis – Bayern Munich

Virgil van Djik – Liverpool

Sergio Ramos – Real Madrid

Trent Alexander-Arnold – Liverpool

Joshua Kimich – Bayern Munich

Kevin de Brune – Manchester City

Bruno Fernandes – Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo – Piedmont Football (Juventus)

Robert Lewandowski – Bayern Munich

Kylen Mbappé – Paris Saint-Germain
