Morning Titbits: Unstoppable City go 10 clear; Haaland reveals Mbappe inspiration

The latest football news featuring Manchester City, Erling Haaland, Andrea Pirlo and Juventus and Champions League results.

Manchester City on Wednesday night recorded their 17th consecutive victory over Everton to go 10 points clear on the Premier League table.

Guardiola’s men have put together an incredible run of a form following a faltering start to the season and are now looking unstoppable and favorites to reclaim the title they lost to Liverpool last season.

They went into the game with a seven point gap between themselves and rivals, Manchester United, but have now made it 10, thanks to the 3-1 victory at the Goodison Park.

Phil Foden opened the scoring for the league leaders through a deflected strike in the 32nd minute before Richarlison equalized for Everton five minutes later.

Riyad Mahrez then got a delicious second for the visitors in the 63rd minute through a brilliantly curled strike before Bernado Silva who set up the second grabbed the third in the 77th minute.

While Manchester City celebrated a big win, Everton ruined a big opportunity to go level on point with Liverpool with a game in hand.

Haaland: Mbappe hat trick inspired me

Borussia Dortmund forward, Erling Haaland has revealed that Kylian Mbappe’s heroics against Barcelona on Tuesday night inspired his record breaking performance in his side’s win against Sevilla.

Haaland scored twice in the fist half to help Dortmund earn a great advantage in the first leg of the Champions League away to Sevilla and revealed after the game that he was inspired by Mbappe.

The French star was at the heart of things when Paris Saint Germain thrashed a toothless Barcelona at the Camp Nou thanks to his three goals.

While revealing that talks with his manager have been helpful, Haaland admitted to taking inspiration from Mbappe’s performance.

“When I saw Mbappe score the hat trick, I got free motivation, so thanks to him,” Haaland said after the match. “He scored some nice goals and I got a free boost from him, so it was nice.”

On the manager, he said: “We had a good plan,” Haaland said. “[Borussia manager] Edin [Terzic] has been good and I’ve been talking a lot with him. He said today would be my game and that I would get my chances and I did, so it was an important win.

“It was not good to let in two goals, but it is good to score three away goals and take them with us.”

The two goals scored against Sevilla means that Haaland has now became the first player in Champions League history to score at least 17 goals in his first 13 appearances.

Pirlo upset over early goals

Juventus coach, Andrea Pirlo was left unhappy and upset by his side’s early conceding of goals in both halves of their game against FC Porto.

The Serie A side conceded in the first 70 seconds of each half, leading to their 1-2 defeat against FC Porto in the first leg of the round of 16.

Speaking after the game, Pirlo said:  “We had prepared well for this game, it was not the attitude we wanted, but conceding a goal in the opening minute when we handed it to them on a silver platter made everything more difficult.

“When you concede a goal after one minute, a strange one at that, it’s natural the players will lose confidence, especially against a side that knows how to clam up in defence.

“Our approach was wrong after we conceded the goal … We had planned on attacking the deeper spaces, but if you take too many touches, things get complicated. We weren’t smart, the ball was moved around too slowly.

“Porto got the game immediately on the track they wanted. With such a packed fixture list, it’s normal you can’t always maintain absolute focus and the right tempo, but it shouldn’t have happened in the round of 16 of the Champions League.”
