Former Liverpool Defender Proposes Controversial Replacement for Jurgen Klopp

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has stirred up speculation by suggesting that England manager Gareth Southgate would be the ideal candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Klopp’s announcement in January regarding his departure from Liverpool at the end of the season has ignited discussions about his successor.

While several names have been floated for the coveted position, including former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who has been lauded for his managerial success at Bayer Leverkusen, Johnson’s suggestion of Southgate has raised eyebrows.

The 53-year-old Southgate, who currently leads the English national team, has been praised for his stewardship of the Three Lions, particularly guiding them to the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the final of the 2020 UEFA European Championship.

In an interview with Betfred, Johnson explained his reasoning behind endorsing Southgate for the Liverpool job, citing the manager’s track record with England and his ability to work with top-tier players.

“It’s an awkward one to talk about because you don’t want to go into a major tournament speculating about whether England’s manager is going elsewhere,” Johnson remarked. “If he’s available in the summer, then you’ve got to look at all the options. He’s done a brilliant job with England, so there’s no reason why he can’t be successful with a club like Liverpool as he’d be dealing with a similar standard of players.”

However, Johnson also expressed his desire to see Xabi Alonso eventually take the helm at Liverpool, acknowledging the Spaniard’s potential but suggesting that the club might need someone to navigate the post-Klopp era initially.

“I believe somebody needs to come in after Jürgen Klopp and take the bullet first,” Johnson stated. “I know that sounds horrible and brutal to say, but there’s no chance of whoever comes in next being better than Jürgen, and that’s a testament to the team he’s built at Liverpool.”
