Jonathan David is a dream partner for Liverpool ‘pressing monster’

Liverpool supposedly wants Lille striker, Jonathan David, according to reports. The Canadian would be a dream partner for Diogo Jota.

L’Equipe claims Liverpool have eyes on Jonathan David. He’d apparently cost around £30m to sign from Lille – a deal we think would be an absolute bargain. But what exactly is that fit? For us, you only need to look at a current star to see what David could bring.

Jonathan David – a dream fit for Liverpool

FBref uses Statsbomb data to provide ‘scouting reports on players. They take everything a player has done over the last 12 months and compare it to other players in their position across the top five European leagues. It gives an idea of what a player can bring and what they do at an elite level. For David, a few things stand out.

First and foremost is his scoring. David has improved dramatically in this regard over the last 12 months. He started incredibly slowly on joining Lille but exploded in 2021.

The Canadian is currently Ligue 1’s top goalscorer. A look at his data shows how as he’s currently 99th percentile for goals per shot. 0.29 of his shots go in – the highest across Europe’s top 5 leagues is 0.30. That’s a truly sensational conversion rate and if he keeps it up, David will become one of Europe’s most impressive finishers. But there’s still the question of whether he can keep that going long-term.

What isn’t in question, though, is his pressing. David is a magnificent pressing forward – something he’s consistently shown. He wins 40% of his tackles against dribblers (95th percentile for forwards), applies over 19 presses per game (88th), 10 of which come in the attacking third (94th), and is successful with at least 5 (88th). These are fantastic numbers and exactly what Liverpool wants from their forwards.

But it’s worth considering the long-term here. Liverpool’s next major signing isn’t really arriving to play with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, or Roberto Firmino long-term. All will move past 30 next year, after all.

Instead, it’s about a long-term partner for Diogo Jota. David would be a Liverpool dream in that regard, given how highly they value pressing. Jota is someone Pep Lijnders calls a ‘pressing monster’ – one of the best at a club that values pressing so highly. Adding David alongside him – a 21-year-old who is already among the best in Europe – is a terrifying prospect.

The two could be devastating together as high-pressing, elite finishers who contribute wonderful all-around games. For £30m, it’s a partnership we’d love to see.
