Dean Smith: Aston Villa not ‘fearful’ of Manchester United or top clubs

Aston Villa boss, Dean Smith, has indicated that his side is less fearful in big games this season and has fired a warning to Manchester United ahead of their New Year fixture.

Dean Smith, whose team have already beaten Liverpool, Leicester, Arsenal and Wolves, has warned Manchester United to expect a tough examination of their title credentials.

While Smith respects the strength of the Manchester United squad, he believes that his side have given a good account of themselves against the big teams this season and expects that to continue against Manchester United.

We get a day more preparation time for this game,” said Smith at his pre match conference.

It’s a busy period. These are the games they want to play in and look forward to.

Manchester United is probably one of the first fixtures all players look for. We had a good result there last season and we feel we’re in a better place now but we know the talent Manchester United have got.

We were more fearful of these fixtures last season because of the newness of actually getting into the Premier League. This season we know where we’re at.

We’ve proven to ourselves by going to Arsenal and winning, going to Leicester and winning, beating Wolves and getting a point at Chelsea that we can go and compete with the best in this league.

We’re excited about the opportunities and we’re ready for them.

Dean Smith’s attempt to secure a win against another top team, this season, has been given a massive boost with defender Tyrone Mings back after suspension while Ross Barkley is also in contention after a hamstring injury.

The latter, in particular, was in an impressive form since his loan move from Chelsea before being sidelined with injury, but he has returned in a good moment to help his side.

Dean Smith’s side are three points behind fourth-placed Everton with a game in hand as they mount a challenge for Europe, having beaten relegation on the final day of last season.
