Atletico Madrid stay on top as Simeone reaches new milestone
A 20th minute goal from former Barcelona striker, Luis Suarez, ensured that Atletico Madrid stayed on top of the 2020/21 La liga season, heading into the new year, while celebrating Diego Simeone’s 500th game in charge of the club in style.
Although unavailable for the first two games of the season, the Madrid club have had an impressive start to the new campaign and their latest win over Getafe marks their 11th win of the new season, as they head into the new year.
The league leaders went into the game after it was confirmed by the club that Diego Costa had agreed to leave the club as a free agent in the January transfer window.
But thoughts of his departure affecting the club was put to bed, on a temporary basis, as Simeone’s men went on to secure a win without him in the starting XI.
Luis Suarez who joined from Barcelona to complement the efforts of Costa was on the scoresheet. The striker netted with a deft header from a delightful Yannick Carrasco cross in the 20th minute to give Atletico Madrid all the three points in their 14th game of the season.
Atletico Madrid celebrate Simeone with win
The win was also the perfect way to celebrate Diego Simeone’s 500th game in charge of the club since his appointment in 2011.
Since his appointment, Simeone has won a total of seven trophies, most notably the Spanish league title in 2013-14.
In addition to the league crown, Simeone has also guided Atleti to two Europa League crowns, a Copa del Rey, a Supercopa de Espana, and two UEFA Super Cup crowns, with the Champions League being the most coveted trophy to have eluded him so far.
Atletico Madrid are now 3 points ahead of second place side Real Madrid with two games in hand, and Simeone will be looking to secure another La liga win for his side, this term.
