Liverpool manager Arne Slot lauded Ryan Gravenberch for his exceptional performance in the Reds’ 3-1 Champions League win over AC Milan at the San Siro.
Gravenberch was outstanding in midfield, recording six interceptions matching the highest by a Liverpool player in a Champions League game since Trent Alexander-Arnold’s six against Manchester City in April 2018. The Dutch midfielder also regained possession nine times, the most on the night, and achieved a notable 89% pass success rate (34/38).
Slot praised Gravenberch’s contribution, stating on Amazon Prime TV:
“He took to the occasion of playing at a stadium that’s had some unbelievable Dutch midfielders. He played an unbelievable game.”
Gravenberch’s performance was supported by Alexis Mac Allister’s relentless effort and Dominik Szoboszlai’s creative influence. Mac Allister led the pitch in tackles, made the most passes into the final third, and delivered three key passes. Szoboszlai, on the other hand, recorded three shots on target, his highest in a single game for Liverpool since March.
Slot emphasized the effectiveness of his midfield trio, noting their high pressing and composure. “I think it’s a combination of energy and quality on the ball,” Slot commented. “These three work really hard as well. They’re quite comfortable on the ball.”
The Reds’ impressive victory marked a strong beginning to their Champions League campaign, with Gravenberch and his midfield partners playing pivotal roles in their success.
