iOS 18: 5 Exciting New Features

Apple has unveiled its first public beta of iOS 18, allowing adventurous iPhone users to explore the upcoming features before their official release. This initial beta version is available for compatible iPhones, including models as old as the iPhone XR. However, it’s worth noting that beta software may have bugs and incomplete features, so it’s advisable not to install it on your primary device.

While some of Apple’s anticipated AI tools won’t be available until later, and only for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iOS 18 still brings several intriguing updates. Here’s a look at five notable features you can test out now:

5 Exciting New Features in iOS 18

ext from (Almost) Anywhere with Satellites

iOS 18 introduces the ability to send texts via satellite. This feature is available for iPhone 14 and newer models, allowing you to send messages even when you’re outside of cellular coverage, as long as you have a clear view of the sky. In initial tests, the feature worked in areas where traditional cell service was unavailable. However, responses may not come through immediately if the recipient is not using the preview software.

Enhanced App Privacy

With iOS 18, you can now require Face ID to access any app on your iPhone. This added layer of security ensures that your private information remains protected, even when you temporarily hand over your device. Simply long-press an app icon, choose the “Require Face ID” option from the menu, and your app will be locked behind biometric authentication.

Fight Off Motion Sickness

For those prone to motion sickness, iOS 18 offers Visual Motion Cues. This feature displays a series of dots around the edge of your screen that move in response to the motion of your vehicle, helping to align visual and physical sensations. To activate this, go to Settings, then Accessibility, and select the Motion option to enable Vehicle Motion Cues.

Redesign Your Home Screen

iOS 18 provides new tools for personalizing your home screen. You can resize app icons, match them with your wallpaper or Dark Mode, and move them freely around the screen. Additionally, shortcuts on the lock screen can now be customized to open specific apps or trigger Control Center features. To make these changes, long-press on your home screen or lock screen wallpaper and select “Customize.”

Transcribe Lectures, Meetings, and More

If you use voice memos for notes or reminders, iOS 18 makes it easier to convert these recordings into text. You can transcribe audio directly from your voice memos or Notes app, with text appearing quickly after playback. Although the accuracy is still being refined and speaker differentiation is limited, this feature offers a convenient way to access and manage your recorded content.
